What can I do to get rid of constipation?

I was told that spinach is a very good source of fiber, but i know it isn’t the best. Then I later heard that beans are a much better source of fiber. I wanted to know because I have been having continuous bouts of constipation. I get constipated on and off for a week, then I’m fine the next and so on. My mom said I’m probably not drinking enough water. It’s hard to do that at school because they have a rule that we can’t carry water bottles and the water fountains don’t really give you the amount of water you need in the day. I eat pretty healthy by the way. Anyway, what can i do to alleviate this constipation? I can’t do a colon cleanse because I have no money to purchase one or the time to make sure I’m near a bathroom. Help me please because it’s starting to make me nervous and think something else is wrong.

You are describing an inconsistent pattern of bowel consistency. It is normal to have this kind of inconsistency, but you shouldn’t be having to deal with constipation. Try keeping track of what you eat and when – and the… er… consequences. Almost all fruits and vegetables are good sources of fiber, as are whole grains. And beans are great for this… AND they are healthy. Just by looking at your eating habits, you might figure it out. And of course, it helps your doctor if you keep such a record. Also, physical exercise helps – and your mom is right. Water helps, too.

PLEASE do not get a colon cleanse – ever. They can literally kill you. People have suffered heart failure (due to electrolyte imbalance) as a direct result of this quackery and some people have experienced a perforated colon. That’s a hole in your colon – right in your abdomen. Very dangerous. I have one patient right now who has Hepatitis C from a colon cleanse. The person operating the equipment did not know how to properly sterilize it.

I hope you will take this seriously – your colon cleanse itself every day, and the people who do this procedure don’t appear to understand what the colon does. The claims I have seen made about it are actually related to the work of the small intestine – a colon cleanse can’t reach the small intestine – and you wouldn’t want it to!

If you eat a plant based diet, you should have better regularity. So sorry about the school situation. Perhaps you could start up a petition of students? If they aren’t going to fix the water fountains, they should let you carry water. You need to maintain proper hydration.
